Grow White Icicle Radish and make it easy to say, “I grew it. I’ll eat it!” A top choice for gardeners who love a crisp tasting Daikon for a pickle or to grate into a salad bowl. Toss with lemon and a glug of extra virgin olive oil, the white tapered roots are half the size and take half the time to grow than a traditional Daikon.
Also called Lady Finger, the White Icicle radish was introduced before 1896 and is an excellent radish yet fairly unknown. It's somewhat chilly name refers to its shape and appearance or course, which is long and slender like a carrot but winter white in color. Even though it's so attractive, it's the flavor and texture that will make you melt - very smooth, crisp and tender with a rich, spicy taste. White Icicle radishes are very easy to grow and extremely quick to mature, with seedlings emerging in as little as 4 days and mature radishes ready in just a few weeks. This makes them a fantastic choice for successive sowings. Simply plant a new crop every two weeks from very early spring to mid-summer and you'll enjoy heavy yields of these beautiful radishes all season long. While extremely tolerant of cold weather and frosts, White Icicle radishes don't do very well in extreme heat, so plant about two months before any fall frosts if you want a crop for winter storage. When fully mature, these radishes will be 5-6 inches long and an inch or more in diameter. However, they can also be picked when much younger and shorter to experience their flavor at its strongest.
