Best when eaten sun warmed and straight off the vine, the vigorous vines of Yellow Pear bear generous clusters of evenly ripe golden fruit. Grow alongside Red Pear for a match made in heaven. The small fruits add a decorative splash of color to an Antipasto platter or can be gently sautéed over low heat to soften for fresh sauce over pasta, served with slivers of sweet basil and a grating of hard cheese.
Plant Information
The Yellow Pear is a very old tomato dating back to at least the early 1600s. Its flavor is milder than its Red Pear relative, and has even been described by some as being slightly tangy. The vine-like plants can be grown on the ground and left to sprawl, producing higher yields of smaller tomatoes and eliminating pruning. However, the preferred growing method is to stake the vines for support, enabling them to climb upward and bear larger fruits. Yellow Pear tomatoes grow in clusters of 4-6 fruits, each tomato reaching 1-2 inches in length and 2 inches or more in diameter when mature. Their skin is shiny and smooth and their yellow coloring can vary from lemon to sunshine to gold. With a range of mild to sweet in flavor, they make beautiful slicing tomatoes for salads and sandwiches, but are also delicious roasted, canned, or made into sauces and soups. Like all tomatoes, Yellow Pear tomatoes are rich with healthy nutrients, most notably lycopene. Tomatoes have the highest concentration of this beneficial antioxidant, which has been found to aid in the prevention and treatment of cancer, promote cardiovascular health, and help maintain healthy eyesight.
