A popular cherry tomato variety that's been around since Colonial times, Red Pear tomatoes are named for their radiant red color and unique pear shape. The vine-like plants can be left to sprawl on the ground, giving you higher yields of smaller tomatoes and eliminating the need to prune. However, the preferred growing method is to support the vines with staking, enabling them to climb upward and produce larger fruits. Red Pear tomatoes grow in clusters of 4-6 fruits, each tomato 1-2 inches long and 2 inches or more in diameter. Attractive and very tasty, they make superb slicing tomatoes for salads and sandwiches, but are also delicious roasted, canned, or made into sauces and soups. Like all tomatoes, Red Pear tomatoes are known to be very rich with healthy nutrients, the most notable of which is lycopene. Tomatoes have the highest concentration of this beneficial antioxidant, which has been found to promote cardiovascular health, aid in the prevention and treatment of cancer, and help maintain healthy eyes.
