Whether you prefer a classic pea salad with new potatoes or Pad Thai redux, there is nothing old fashioned about Dwarf Grey Sugar edible pod peas. Sturdy stout plants bear stunning purple flowers to grace a bouquet or garnish a plate before turning into one of the oldest cultivated peas a gardener can grow. Tall vines require staking for maximum yields.
Plant Information
Introduced in 1773, the Dwarf Grey sugar pea variety is the earliest producer and the smallest plant in the family of edible podded peas. The petite size of the plants (2-3 feet tall) makes them very manageable and their sturdiness makes them self-supporting so no staking is required. They're also very cold hardy, growing well in cooler areas with short summers. Suitable for growing in containers, Dwarf Grey sugar pea plants produce pods that are about 2-3 inches in length when mature and contain 5-8 sweet peas inside. Intended for eating whole, the plump pods are deliciously tender and perfectly sweet with a crispness and crunch that will add a lot to a salad or stir fry. They're also wonderful eaten solo as a healthy snack.
