Dig in to these extremely sweet orange muskmelons like candy and be sure to have napkins nearby. Each vine produces up to a half dozen fruit that pops off the vines when ripe. Averaging about 3 pounds each, Hearts of Gold is half the size of Honey Rock. No pruning or drip irrigation required, these reliable and prolific melons grow beautifully in every garden. 80 days.
Plant Information
Developed by Roland Morrill of Benton, Michigan, Hearts of Gold cantaloupe melon has been a popular pick for American gardens since it was introduced in 1917. Also known as Hoodoo, it's a reliable grower and generous yielder, each plant producing 5-7 spherical melons that are 6-7 inches in diameter and 3-4 pounds. Their skin is thin and firm and heavily netted, protecting the lusciously sweet, thick and tender, deep-orange flesh inside. Growing your own Hearts of Gold cantaloupes is so much better than buying them in the store. Not only are vine-ripened melons bigger and juicier, they're also more fragrant and flavorful. This is because growing them yourself allows them to stay on the vine as long as possible, where they can soak up all those amazing nutrients and sugars until the very last minute before picking and eating. You'll know your Hearts of Gold melons are ready to be picked when the skin color between the rind netting appears brown and no longer green. The blossom end of the fruit will also have a wonderfully fruity aroma. Gently tug on the melon, and if it detaches without much effort, it's ready to enjoy. Slice and dice for a beautiful fruit salad, or eat right off the rind like watermelon.
