Did you know the Kentucky Derby has its own lettuce? This is it! Crisp and sweet with picturesque, glossy green leaves, Bibb butterhead lettuce always looks perfect, is very easy to grow, and will produce heavy yields in cooler temps. Plant successive crops every two weeks for a continuous harvest all season long. 45-60 days.
Plant Information
Also known as Limestone lettuce because it was first grown in the lime-rich soil of Kentucky, Bibb butterhead lettuce gets its name from its inventor, Lt. Jack B. Bibb. Thank you, Lieutenant! The traditional salad lettuce of the Kentucky Derby, Bibb Butterhead lettuce is an excellent cold-weather vegetable and will do well in areas with cooler summers or warmer winters (anywhere the soil stays below 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Generous, frilly lettuce heads will be ready to harvest in as little as 55 days, each producing layers of thick, dark green leaves with paler green leaves at the center. The taste is delicately sweet and the texture is crisp, so it's a go-to variety for all of your summer salads, as well as a fantastic way to add some crunch to sandwiches.
