White Vienna kohlrabi has been around since the 16th century and is a frequent ingredient in Indian cuisine. It was very common in its earlier days but has become less so over time, and only recently has it begun making an appearance in more American gardens. Those who grow it love it, for its round bulbs, smooth skin, tender white flesh, crisp texture, and delicious flavor that's been compared to turnips, celery, and cabbage but is somewhat lighter and sweeter. Very easy to grow and tolerant of colder temps, White Vienna kohlrabi can be planted in staggered sowings for continuous crops all season; simply plant new seeds every 2-3 weeks until a month or so before autumn's first frost. Ready to pick when about the size of an apple, White Vienna kohlrabi is excellent eaten raw in salads and slaws or solo as a snack, is equally delicious steamed or lightly cooked, and is loaded with lots of fiber, manganese, and potassium as well as many other vitamins and minerals.
