Don’t plant the Large Flat Dutch Drumhead unless you’re fixing to win a blue ribbon at the state fair. You’ll certainly get points for the unique flat oblong shape of the head, and the thick, bluish leaves. Introduced in 1863, and still growing strong in heirloom circles, loved and appreciated for fresh eating and storage.
Plant Information
Brought to the US by German immigrants and known as Premium Late Flat Dutch prior to 1840, this cabbage was described by Burr in 1863 as being one of the best late fall and winter cabbages. The heads are very large, blue-green in color, and somewhat oval in shape, and at full maturity they weigh in at a hefty 10-15 pounds. Excellent for fresh eating or storage, this is the classic garden cabbage that one always wants as part of the crop.
