This gourd is for the birds...for real! Birdhouse Bottle gourds are a very popular choice for making birdhouses and other crafts. Their glossy hourglass shape makes them beautiful; their sturdy lightweight shell makes them practical. Grow, dry, then decorate, or leave them in their naturally pretty state. 110-130 days.
Plant Information
Pretty and functional, gourds have been used for centuries as containers, bottles, fishing floats, and even musical instruments. They're easily grown, harvested, and dried, and can also be painted if you want to get creative. The smooth, tan shell of the captivatingly curvy Birdhouse Bottle gourd becomes hard and glossy when ready to harvest, giving it a particularly fitting form for attractive and sturdy birdhouses. These gourds grow on long vines that spread out horizontally along the ground. When the leaves and stem turn brown and begin to wither, it's time to cut the gourds from the vine. Cut them at their stems, leaving about 2 inches behind, then clean them with vinegar and water to help prevent the growth of mold. Dry them on a screen for best air circulation in a location that remains warm and dry. Birdhouse Bottle gourds can take several weeks to dry, and be sure to test their hardness periodically as you may want them to be slightly softer if you'll be cutting any holes.
