The Royalty Purple Pod bush bean was bred by Elwin Meader from the University of New Hampshire in the late 1940s. When mature, the plants will produce quite a heavy harvest of impressive, 5-inch pods. Before that, however, they like to show off in your garden by creating quite a display of vibrant purple flowers. Reaching approximately 2 feet in height, Royal Purple Pod bush bean plants are self-supporting and also easy to grow in a raised bed or containers. They're very quick to mature, making them ideal for short growing seasons like those found in the north. A mature plant will produce quite a heavy harvest of impressive pods 5-6 inches in length. Your beans will be ready to pick about 10 weeks after they're sown, and you'll know they're ready because they'll be about as thick as a pencil. Their sides will also be curvy thanks to all the healthy beans inside! Royal Purple Pod bush beans are great for freezing and canning, steamed or cooked in a favorite recipe, or enjoyed raw as part of a salad or snack. They're rich in antioxidants and extremely high in fiber and flavonoids, helping to reduce the risk of heart disease. They're also an excellent source of vitamins A, C, K, and B6, and folic acid.
