Not to be outdone, these irresistible yellow wax beans contain dark black seeds, creating a stunner in the garden. Serve on a bed of orange nasturtiums, painted with a drizzle of herby vinaigrette, and give them the attention they deserve. Attention gardeners! Sow a row and tell us what you think.
A cross between Improved Black Wax and Black Eyed Wax varieties, Pencil Pod Black Wax beans were introduced by Calvin Keeney in 1900 and get their name from their appearance. The pods are long and yellow and about the diameter of a pencil when mature, and the beans inside are black and waxy in texture. Reaching 1-2 feet in height, Pencil Pod Black Wax bush bean plants are self-supporting and easy to grow in a garden, a raised bed, or containers. A mature plant will produce quite a heavy harvest of impressive pods that are 5-7 inches in length. Pencil Pod Black Wax beans are great fresh, frozen, or canned, steamed or cooked in a favorite recipe, or enjoyed raw as part of a salad or snack. They're low in calories, yet full of healthy carbohydrates and protein. They're also a great source of calcium, iron, and manganese, as well as vitamin C and other antioxidants.
