Say goodbye to peeling carrots, when you grow this tender French heirloom, Nantes Scarlet Half-Long carrot and is unnecessary when you are growing root crops in organic soil. Sow seeds direct in early spring and keep a succession of carrot seeds planted for a continuous supply of tender roots. Circa 1860 and still going strong.
Introduced pre-1900, the Nantes Scarlet Half-Long is the classic cooking carrot that originated in the area of the city of Nantes, France and has been a staple of good American gardens for decades. It's become such a favorite because of its even sizing, rich color, sweet flavor, and fine-grained flesh. Its roots are cylindrical, blunt tipped, and nearly coreless, and can grow to 6-8 inches in length with shoulders as wide as 1.5 inches. Aside from being a superstar when it comes to being eaten fresh, steamed, or cooked as well as being canned or frozen, the Nantes' high moisture content makes it a natural for juicing. Nantes Scarlet Half-Long carrots tolerate long growing seasons quite well. You can even stagger your plantings every few weeks to enjoy continuous carrot crops all summer.
