The only and only, tried and true, Moon and Stars watermelon deserves a space in every heirloom garden. Introduced in the early 1900’s, slice past the yellow stars, and one big moon to reveal juicy, sweet watermelon flesh inside. Don’t eat it alone – instead invite the family or the neighborhood over to enjoy the benefit of this enormous fruit which when grown to full size can with up to 40 pounds. Save the seeds for next year’s garden, and the rind for a batch of watermelon pickles.
Introduced before 1910, the Moon & Stars watermelon variety is said to be the most beautiful watermelon grown. Its name refers to the bright yellow splotches and tiny yellow flecks that cover its dark green rind. It takes a bit longer to reach maturity than some other watermelons, but you can be certain these fruits are worth the wait. Their flesh is pinkish red and very sweet, with that refreshing watery texture that's so perfect at taking the edge of the heat of summer. The plants will produce several substantial fruits, each one somewhat oblong in shape and a sizable 25-30 pounds. Although awesome enough to share in a single sitting, it's good to know Moon & Stars watermelons are also great keepers and will store well in the fridge for up to a few weeks.
