Forget grocery store lettuce, because once you taste home grown Green Salad Bowl lettuce, you’ll never go back. We think it may even become your obsession, harvesting leaf by leaf for a daily salad. Grown as a loose-leaf head it can turn into a giant mass of frilly green leaves. Crisp, tender and slow to bolt, what more can you expect from the All-America Selections winner.
An "All-America Selections" winner from 1952, Green Salad Bowl leaf lettuce is definitely one to be prized. It's a steady and reliable grower in cooler climates with shorter summers, but also tolerant of warmer temps in areas with extended seasons. Low-maintenance and easy to sow in the spring or fall, it can be planted every few weeks for successive crops that last all season long. Green Salad Bowl leaf lettuce produces tender, crinkly, lime-green leaves on heads that can grow to 15 inches in diameter, but even at that size they'll never taste bitter. Known as a "cutting" variety, you can harvest Green Salad Bowl leaf lettuce by cutting the leaves as needed, or pull the entire plant all at once. Their flavor is mellow and sweet and their texture is tender and crisp - definitely qualities no salad should be without!
