Fits in the palm of your hand, Golden Midget watermelon weighs around three pounds each, ready for harvest when the skin takes on a yellow glow. Sweet tasting, and ideal for small gardens, containers or the children’s garden, Golden Midget is delicious right out of the gate. Slice and serve, the old-fashioned charm of Golden Midget delivers, with plenty of seeds and sweetness as only an heirloom watermelon can be.
Introduced in 1959 by its creators, Dr. Elwyn Meader and Albert Yaeger of the University of New Hampshire, the Golden Midget watermelon variety is a Pumpkin Rind and New Hampshire Midget hybrid. Its compact vines and petite fruit make it a great choice for small plots or patio gardens where space might be tight. One of the earliest varieties you can grow, Golden Midget watermelons are ready in about 70 days, treating you to a generous harvest of mouthwatering melons each weighing about 3 pounds. When the fruit is ripe it turns a striking golden yellow that beautifully complements its salmon pink flesh. You'll know your fruit is ready to pick if it sounds hollow when you knock on it or give it a gentle thump. Cut the watermelons cleanly from the vine and enjoy immediately for a sweet, juicy, and refreshing treat that's ideal solo or as part of a fruit salad. Golden Midget watermelons can also be stored in the fridge for up to three weeks.
