Get down and dirty with peppery and dependable, Chinese Rose Radishes. Spicy tasting thinly slice for a colorful crudité with a small bowl of softened sweet butter and sea salt. Sow seeds in early spring or fall, and before long the dark pink roots will be ready to harvest.
Introduced around the 1950s, the China Rose variety is a beautiful winter radish that's named for its country of origin and its smooth, rose-colored skin. It's "winter" classification means it's ideal for planting late in the summer for a fall harvest and winter storage, but it can also be planted in late spring after any threat of frost for a bountiful, mid-summer crop. Given its shorter growing season, it's fantastic that it grows so quickly and easily. Seedlings emerge in as little as 4 days with young radishes ready for picking in about 25 days. Fully mature radishes, ready in about 55 days, will be 6-8 inches in length and a uniform 2 inches in diameter. Their flesh is white with a peppery sweet flavor that's perfect for adding some zing to all your summer salads, sauteed solo as a side dish or as part of a stir-fry, or even pickled. China Rose radishes store very well over the winter for continuous use.
