Dating back to 1895, Brandywine is hands-down one of the most popular heirloom tomatoes. Brandywine will easily win a prize at your local state fair for beauty and substantial form, yet flavor is the real stand out. The plants are vigorous, growing up to nine feet tall, two pounders have been reported, yet the average size fruit is slightly larger than one pound per tomato. Unusual potato shaped leaves distinguish this plant from another, various strains exist, yet we offer the best tasting variety, sure to become your favorite heirloom in the garden.
One of the most famous of the heirloom tomatoes, Brandywine is an Amish variety that was introduced in 1885. It comes from the collection of the late Ben Quisenberry, who collected hundreds of tomato strains from 1910 to the 1960s. The vine-like plants can be left to grow on the ground, producing higher yields of smaller tomatoes and eliminating the need to prune. However, the preferred growing method is to support the vines with staking, enabling them to climb upward and produce much larger fruits. And these tomatoes do get large (up to 7 inches in diameter and 1.5 pounds apiece!), so be sure your staking structure is of ample size and sturdiness to support the fruits' weight. Brandywine tomatoes grow in clusters of 1-2, each tomato becoming a beautiful, reddish pink color with ribbing that's very slight. They're very meaty, juicy, beefsteak fruits with a deliciously sweet flavor. Like all tomatoes, Brandywine tomatoes are filled with a variety of healthy nutrients, most notably lycopene. Tomatoes have the highest concentration of this potent antioxidant, which has been found to aid in the prevention and treatment of cancer, promote cardiovascular health, and help maintain healthy eyes.
