Soft green leaves cupped into a tender head, Bibb Butterhead Lettuce is notably the first America gourmet lettuce. Prefers richly-fed soil and will reward gardeners with a delicate flavor that can only be paired with a dressing made with the finest extra virgin olive oil. Bred during the mid 1800’s in Kentucky, the exquisitely beautiful head, adapts to most seasons and climates.

Plant Information
Also known as Limestone lettuce because it was first grown in the lime-rich soil of Kentucky, Bibb butterhead lettuce gets its name from its inventor, Lt. Jack B. Bibb. Thank you, Lieutenant! The traditional salad lettuce of the Kentucky Derby, Bibb Butterhead lettuce is an excellent cold-weather vegetable and will do well in areas with cooler summers or warmer winters (anywhere the soil stays below 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Generous, frilly lettuce heads will be ready to harvest in as little as 55 days, each producing layers of thick, dark green leaves with paler green leaves at the center. The taste is delicately sweet and the texture is crisp, so it's a go-to variety for all of your summer salads, as well as a fantastic way to add some crunch to sandwiches.
